This article will outline the basic steps necessary to add and monitor your Foscam-branded camera into Live Cams Pro. There are several ways to do this and I will show you each method in detail.
Method 1 – Scan the local network to discover the camera automatically
- Launch Live Cams Pro on your iPhone or iPad and wait until the “thumbnail screen” appears. This screen is intended to show one or more cameras at a time with a simple video display and no PTZ controls. It will be empty the first time you run the app.
- Click the “+” sign on the bottom toolbar to add a camera.
- When the “Add Camera” screen appears, click the “Scan” button (“Scan Network” on iPad) on the bottom toolbar.
- Wait for the network scan to complete. The app scans for 15 seconds and then allows you to select a device. If your Foscam devices are found they will appear in the list. Your iPhone/iPad must be connected to the same network as the cameras in order for the scan to work. You will not be able to detect any cameras if your iPhone or iPad is using a cellular network connection. Press the green “+” sign next to the camera you wish to add.
- You will be returned to the “Add Camera” screen and the device information will be pre-filled except for the username/password values. Depending on the camera model selected, you may see a pop-up appear that prompts you to read profile-specific setup instructions. Some cameras like the Foscam 9821 V1 require special router configuration for the connections to work remotely. You can ignore the prompt or read the instructions.
- Enter your camera’s admin username and password and press Save on the top toolbar. If all works as expected you will see the thumbnail image appear after the camera is connected. Tap the thumbnail once to enter the single-camera view with audio and PTZ controls.
- If the camera does not connect or fails with some sort of error, tap and hold one finger on the error and wait for a menu to pop up. Select “Edit” and try to adjust the information to correct any errors. You may need to try different usernames and passwords or double-check that the correct camera profile is selected for your device model.
Method 2 – Add the camera manually
Steps to add a camera manually are slightly different, but fairly straightforward. With this technique you can add a camera that uses an external (WWAN) IP address or DNS host name like those ending in “myfoscam.org”. For most Foscam cameras, you can enable the “manufacturer’s DDNS” in the web interface of the camera. Log into a web browser and connect to the camera as an admin user. Navigate to the settings screen and find the Network options. Within the network options you will see DDNS and you can enable DDNS to allow a pre-configured device name to use for connecting on any type of network. My own 98xx devices use a “dh####.myfoscam.org” hostname and this would be entered into Live Cams Pro in the “Host or IP” field.
- Click the “+” sign on the thumbnail screen as described in method 1 above.
- Click the “Change” button for the camera profile field and select the appropriate camera profile for your Foscam. There are several Foscam profiles available, such as the 98xx series, 89xx series, 9820, 86xx series, etc. If you select the wrong profile for your device the application will not be able to connect.
- Enter the camera details including the IP address or DNS host name, HTTP port, channel (if enabled) and the login username/password for the camera.
- Press Save and follow step #7 in method #1 (above) if necessary to correct any errors.
If you know the website address for your camera, you can determine the host/ip and http port to enter. For example:
http://dh9874.myfoscam.org (host is dh9874.myfoscam.org, http port is 80 which is the default if none is specified)
http://dh9874.myfoscam.org:8080 (host is dh9874.myfoscam.org, http port is 8080)
http://192.168.1.15 (host is 192.168.1.15, http port is 80)
